We met Sarah and her three children, age 1, 5, and 11, four months after her husband had died in a tragic accident. Sarah became very depressed, finding it hard to get up in the morning and care for her children.
The family were referred to FSW by the school as the eldest child had become withdrawn. Our Support Worker visited, listened to what each family member needed, and set about helping them. She took the younger children out to play, referred the eldest for specialist counselling, and helped Sarah make contact with a support group and gradually to get the house and bills in order.
She stayed with the family for a year, until they were back on their feet. The eldest is now at secondary school and doing well, and Sarah is considering returning to work.
