We are delighted to be the beneficiaries of support at the 2024 East Sussex Women of the Year Lunch. This event celebrates the achievement of, and contributions made, by many women who live or work in East Sussex or Brighton and Hove.
The origins of the event
A group of women felt that there was a need for an event in East Sussex which could bring together women from all walks of life to celebrate their achievements and recognise their contribution to the local community. The group was strongly encouraged and inspired by the support they received. The East Sussex Women of the Year committee was formed, and the event became a biennial lunch. American Express immediately became a sponsor and has been the lead sponsor since the first lunch in 2011. A great accolade.
The lunch is held every two years in the banqueting suite of the American Express Stadium near Brighton. About 250 guests attend. They are warmly welcomed, starting with an informal reception, followed by a 2-course lunch at tables with a carefully designed seating plan. A variety of interesting speakers have addressed the guests over the years. This year’s guest speaker is author and journalist Louise Minchin.
From the previous 6 lunches, funds raised from voluntary donations have amounted to approximately £80,000. The funds have been distributed to local charities addressing domestic abuse, supporting family carers of people with dementia and to those tackling loneliness and finally to groups promoting physical activities for well-being. Funding has also been given for breast cancer research at Brighton & Sussex Medical School and to Chailey Heritage School.
In 2024 the focus is on neurodivergent children and their families and the few organisations that work actively with them. It is an area that needs far more public funding to provide sufficient support in schools, where it is most needed. We are delighted to be collecting any funds donated by guests, which will be used to support families with neurodivergent children in East Sussex or Brighton & Hove.
